Spain's world tennis number five David Ferrer has crashed out of the Barcelona Open, beaten in straight sets in the second round by the unseeded Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The world number five, who beat compatriot and world number one Rafael Nadal last week in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters, was a long way from his best against a player ranked 50 places below him in the ATP rankings.
