Wellington City Council has announced Courtenay Place, the city's nightclub hotspot, will close to traffic on Friday and Saturday night.

It said Courtenay Place would be closed in both directions from Cambridge Terrace to Taranaki Street between 10pm and 4am to allow for physical distancing.

In a media release, the council said hospitality venues had asked for the road to be closed, to ensure they could operate safely, considering the reopening of bars from 11.59pm tonight could bring increased foot traffic to the area.
