Consumer confidence falters

21:30 pm on 15 March 2013

Consumer confidence has fallen for the first time in five months, due to people becoming more worried about the economic outlook and their own personal finances.

The ANZ Roy Morgan consumer confidence index fell 7 points to 115 in March.

A reading above 100 shows optimism.

ANZ's chief economist Cameron Bagrie says although confidence is still positive, consumers feel financially worse off than they did a year ago.

He says the results are consistent with a moderate amount of spending right across the economy.
