The work will form part of the Avon River Precinct, one of Christchurch's anchor projects, which is being managed by Crown-owned company Ōtākaro Limited.

The precinct features a 2km paved promenade on the eastern side of the river.

The western side of the river will be a green space with walking and cycling paths.

Ōtākaro Limited chief executive Albert Brantley said the next portion of riverside promenade construction was starting mid-March, between Antigua and Durham Streets near the earthquake memorial.

The memorial, which is a part of the precinct, was [http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/325048/memorial-for-canterbury-quake-victims-unveiled

opened on the sixth anniversary] of the Christchurch earthquake, last month.

Ōtākaro Limited said the whole precinct was expected to be completed late next year.
