An eruption of steam, mud and water has burst through a traffic island in Rotorua, forcing a partial road closure.
The fumarole appeared on Lake Road on Wednesday morning.
"We are currently determining the cause, but it is likely to be linked to high ground water levels (weather driven)," Roturua Lakes Council posted on its website.
"Traffic management is in place and one lane is closed on Lake Road while the area is being assessed."
The council asked motorists to avoid Lake Road and find alternative routes.
