The chair of the Fiji Trade and Investment Board, Joe Singh, says that the country must legislate so that the media industry can be regulated.
Mr Singh says while the controversial Media Bill needs modifying, there are glaring problems that exist with the current Media Council structure.
Mr Singh says he has tried to lodge complaints with the council but has been told to use the courts, which he says discourages negative feedback.
"That's a cumbersome way of addressing things and it's better that there is a framework that people can relate to as a matter of immediacy and not go to the expense of the legal costs"
Joe Singh says there is currently no transparency and accountability in the local media.
