The strong New Zealand economy appears to be luring more people to this country, and many New Zealanders are choosing to stay, rather than head across the Tasman.
Meanwhile, the number of new houses consented last year was at its highest level since 2007, with Auckland and Christchurch leading the way.
Statistics New Zealand says that on a seasonally adjusted basis, there was a net gain of 2800 permanent and long-term migrants last month.
The trend for people moving to New Zealand rose all of last year which is down to fewer people leaving for Australia and more people arriving in New Zealand.
And official figures show 2035 new dwellings were consented in December, that's up a seasonally-adjusted 7.6 percent compared with November.
And on an annual basis 21,300 properties were consented last year, up 26 percent from 2012.
