16:26 pm on 22 December 2006

Samoa's judiciary committee, chaired by the chief justice, Patu Falefatu Sapolu, has appointed a local lawyer and former Manu Samoa player, Tauiliili Harry Schuster, as new district court judge.

The minister of justice, Unasa Mesi Galo, says he will be sworn in early next year and will work alongside judge Vaepule Vaemoa Va'ai in the district court.

Meanwhile, the present senior district court judge, Vui Clarence Nelson, will be sworn in tomorrow as a supreme court judge.

The justice minister says they want another Supreme Court judge helping the president of the Lands and Titles court to speed up the handling of appeal cases.
