The party's leader Winston Peters said the party would instead focus its resources on next year's general election.

The seat of Mt Roskill was left vacant last month, when Phil Goff resigned from Parliament after winning the Auckland mayoralty.

National Party list MP Parmjeet Parmar has been chosen by her party to contest the Mt Roskill by-election.

Michael Wood will contest the seat for Labour.

The by-election will be held on 3 December.
