Emergency services were called to the scene on Vine Street, just before 1am.

The exact cause of death had not been confirmed, but the victim appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound.

A blue tent has been set up over the man's body, in the carpark in front of the shops.

The shops on Vine Street have been cordoned off and armed police officers are standing guard.

Police said the public should avoid the area if possible.

"We are trying to piece together the circumstances of what unfolded, which has ultimately led to the death of this man," says Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Vaaelua.

Police officers are going door-to-door in the neighbourhood, as they try to find out what happened.
