Police investigating the death of Craig McKelvie want to know how he got to Lower Hutt on Friday, and are appealing for security camera footage from the area.

At about 10pm on Friday a caller reported to emergency services that a man had been seriously assaulted at an address in Mason Street.

A homicide investigation was opened after McKelvie, 52, was found badly injured, and later died in hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said police now believed McKelvie had been in Johnsonville earlier on Friday evening.

"How Mr McKelvie got to Moera from Johnsonville is now a focus of the investigation and police are appealing to anyone to come forward who has knowledge of this, or is the person who took Mr McKelvie to Johnsonville," Todd said.

Police were continuing to sort through security camera footage from the area, and would like to hear from anyone with recordings from Randwick Road, Mason Street and surrounding streets for Friday 14 October, between 8.45pm and 10.15pm.
