The South Island iwi is planning to demolish the old police headquarters in Christchurch by imploding it this Saturday on Queen's Birthday weekend.

Ceres New Zealand spokesperson, Bernie de Vere urged people to stay away for safety reasons, as tight controls were needed for the demolition.

Mr de Vere said the implosion was very different from when the Radio Network House was imploded in 2012.

He said that building was in the central city red zone where the public could watch the implosion safely, from a distance.
