Fiji interim government says several benefits in electronic voter registration

10:33 am on 12 July 2011

Fiji's interim attorney general says plans for the electronic registration of voters are mainly to eliminate fake names.

The move will involve collecting identity information, such as fingerprints and photographs.

He says electronic voter registration will also reduce costs by establishing a centralised database.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the move to go electronic will also be more efficient, speeding up the voting process.

"Electronic voter registration refers to that, having some form of proper voter identification, whether you use photographs which can be registered and when you go to the polling booth to vote you are easily identified, easily identifiable, whether you have fingerprints, whatever the case may be."

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says work to achieve this is still being finalised, but the interim government wants it in place in time for the elections scheduled for 2014.
