Future electricity retailers could offer unlimited electricity for a fixed price, a visiting American expert says.
The electricity industry charges consumers for every kilowatt hour they use while others, such as the telecommunications industry, offer unlimited broadband as a marketing initiative.
San Franciso energy analyst Fereidoon Sioshansi told a seminar in Wellington last night unlimited energy use for a fixed price was possible.
The proportion of energy coming from renewable resources was increasing and was essentially free, Dr Sioshansi said.
"As you approach the 100 percent renewable target, the energy component becomes smaller and smaller and essentially becomes vanishes at some point."
Eventually the only cost to consumers would be a line charge, he said.
