He finished almost a metre behind winner Darlan Romani of Brazil with American Ryan Crouser second.

Romani's distance of 22.61 metres, broke Walsh's Diamond League record.

At the same meeting South African Caster Semenya clocked the fastest 800 metres ever run in the United States as she continued to challenge new IAAF testosterone rules that could affect her career.

The double Olympic champion triumphantly finished the two-lap race in one minute, 55.70 seconds, winning her 31st consecutive final at the distance. She last lost an 800 metres final in Berlin in 2015.

The competition was the South African's first at her favourite distance since the Swiss Federal Tribunal ruled she did not have to adhere to the IAAF regulations until her appeal against a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling in favour of the new rules is decided.

Meanwhile New Zealander Nick Willis faded to finish last in the men's mile race.

The pair, who have been sailing together for the last two years, have threatened at times, picking up World Cup Series silver medals in Hyeres and Enoshima in 2018 and they also led at last year's sailing world championships in Aarhus for a handful of days before eventually finishing seventh.

They went into last night's (NZ time) medal race in second but their second in that top 10 showdown was enough for them to finish ahead of Poland's Lukasz Przybytek and Pawel Kolodzinski, with James Peters and Fynn Sterritt of Great Britain third.

"The last two days were really stressful and I think everyone was up and down so it made for an interesting regatta," Gunn said.

"It was a pretty tricky week. The second half in gold fleet was pretty shifty. In qualifying we had some good breeze so kept the scorecard clean and held on to the end."

It was another good week for the New Zealand 49er squad with Olympic champions Peter Burling and Blair Tuke fifth and Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie 11th.

French rookie Fabio Quartararo, who started on pole position for the second race in a row, finished third for the Petronas Yamaha team.

Marquez now has 160 points to 116 for Italian Andrea Dovizioso, who finished fourth for Ducati, after eight of 19 races won by four manufacturers.

Italian great Valentino Rossi, Vinales's team mate, crashed out after four laps after tangling with Japanese rider Takaaki Nakagami. Neither were injured.

Vinales took the lead with 11 laps to go with the two Spaniards close together before the Yamaha rider pulled clear to win by 4.8 seconds.

The next race is the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring on 7 July.

Auckland's Supercity Rangers turned up with just seven players and no coach for their national basketball League game against the Canterbury Rams in Christchurch.

Canterbury won 116-65 against the Rangers who were without all three imports - Venky Jois, Tim Quarterman and Nnanna Egwu.

Coach Jeff Green was also missing from the bench.

The late Sunday afternoon game topped off a stressful 24 hours for the Rangers. On Saturday afternoon it was reported that Jois, Egwu and Quarterman would all miss the game as they prepared to head home early in the new week.

The Rangers are seventh on the table with three wins from 16 games.

Coll and King take titles

Paul Coll and Joelle King continued their domination of New Zealand Squash after winning their respective national titles for yet another year

For King it was her eighth national title as she defeated second seed Amanda Landers-Murphy from Rotorua 11-2, 11-4, 11-6, not that she knew how many titles she had won.

"Eight? Really. I didn't know that. I thought it was seven."

In the men's final it was the man from Greymouth, 27-year-old Coll, winning his fifth title as he overcame second seed and one of the most consistent men of the sport over the past few years, Campbell Grayson 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 controlling the pace of the game and never letting Grayson work the front of the court.

Ivanisevic to coach Djokovic

Goran Ivanisevic has joined defending champion Novak Djokovic's coaching staff for Wimbledon.

The 2001 champion will work with the Serbian for the first week of the tournament at the All England Club, though he is trying to shuffle his diary to be able to stay longer.

Ivanisevic, the only man to win the singles title as a wildcard entry, has previously coached Marin Cilic and Milos Raonic.

The best performances of big-serving Ivanisevic's career were on the grass, having been a beaten finalist three times during the 1990s before finally lifting the trophy in 2001.

Despite winning at Wimbledon four times, including last year, it remains the surface that Djokovic is least comfortable on, having never played on it until he had turned professional.

Mick Schumacher to drive his dad's car

Mick Schumacher will drive his father Michael's 2004 Ferrari Formula One car in a demonstration run at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim next month.

Mick, who races in Formula Two for Italian outfit Prema and is a part of Ferrari's young driver development program, will drive the car before qualifying on Saturday 27 July and again before the pre-race drivers' parade the following day, Formula One's commercial rights holders said in a media release.

The demonstration run, at a track where Schumacher took four of his record 91 Formula One wins, was being held to mark the 15th anniversary of his 2004 title success, the statement said.

The Ferrari F2004 carried Schumacher senior to his seventh and final championship during a dominant year in which the Italian team won 15 of the 18 races.
