A man who had just bought a new boat is the latest person to attempt to get around the Auckland border rules. See how the day's Covid-19 news devloped with RNZ's blog.

In the latest update on the situation at the border, police said about 1 percent of vehicles being stopped at these checkpoints are being turned around.

Police said a man was stopped towing a boat at the Coal Hill Road checkpoint yesterday and claimed he was transporting goods, but it turned out the man was using his exemption for personal reasons after purchasing the boat.

"Police issued the man with an infringement notice as a result and have also notified MBIE about the incident.

"People should expect our staff at the northern and southern based checkpoints to be questioning their reasons for travel."

People permitted to cross the Auckland boundary will soon need to produce proof they have had a test in the past seven days.

Speaking at today's Covid-19 briefing - where it was revealed there were 14 new cases - Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said police will begin asking for proof of a test later this week.

Dr Bloomfield says saliva testing is now an option as well and they've seen a good uptake with 170 employers covering more than 1800 employees signing up to use it. More than 350 individuals have also signed up.
