The roof of the SkyCity International Convention centre in Auckland has been ablaze for more than a day as firefighters struggle to put it out.

Auckland Transport is advising people travelling home from central Auckland to avoid peak hour traffic, leave extra time and check the Auckland transport website, and social media for updates.

"If you are able to time your travel to avoid peak hour traffic, by leaving earlier or later than usual, we advise you to do so," AT spokesperson John Nottage says.

"Train services are not affected by traffic diversions, so if you have the option to home by train this would also be a good way to avoid delays."

Bus detours and road closures continue and Auckland Transport is asking people to stay away from the immediate area and the city centre if they can.

Roads are closed, including part of Wellesley, Nelson and Hobson streets.

Auckland Transport is reminding people to be cautious and not to stop and take photos of the fire.
