Hoefl-Riesch retains combined Olympic title

06:09 am on 11 February 2014

The German skier Maria Hoefl-Riesch has retained her Olympic super combined title in Sochi after an impressive slalom display.

The 29-year-old was fifth after the downhill section, but shone in the slalom to finish less than half a second ahead of Nicole Hosp of Austria with downhill leader American Julia Mancuso taking bronze.

Hoefl-Riesch matches Janica Kostelic in winning two straight combined titles after the Croatian won gold in the traditional version, which includes two slalom runs, in 2002 and 2006.

The German will start as favourite for the Downhill later this week.
