Emergency services are responding to two serious crashes, within half an hour of each other, on a major highway south of Christchurch.
A crash involving four vehicles on State Highway 1's Main South Road, near Selwyn Lake Road, was reported to police at about 10.45am on Monday.
A police spokesperson said one person has suffered serious injuries.
The Selwyn River Bridge is blocked to southbound traffic but is expected to reopen shortly.
It follows an earlier collision on the same road, involving two vehicles, a few kilometres south, near Hororata Dunsandel Road.
Emergency services were called to the crash at about 10.20am.
It has left one person with moderate injuries.
Police said the road was expected to open shortly after 12.30pm.
SH2 disruption
The Remutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa is closed due to high winds.
NZTA Waka Kotahi says State Highway 2 is currently closed between the Kaitoke and Featherston gates.
Drivers must avoid the area, delay their travel, or take an alternative route.
Road crews and emergency services are still in the process of dealing with a truck that has rolled near the summit.
A recovery operation is being organised.
