Air strike by Kenya in Somalia

06:12 am on 11 January 2014

The military in Kenya says it has killed more than 30 al-Shabaab fighters, including commanders, in neighbouring Somalia.

Kenyan fighter jets hit a camp at Garbarahey in the Gedo region on Thursday evening.

The strike happened in Garbarahey, near the border with Kenya and Ethiopia, and were the first since October after an attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi.

The BBC reports Kenya has several thousand troops in Somalia, helping the government tackle al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda.

Al-Shabab said this was why it carried out the attack on the Westgate shopping centre, in which at least 67 people died.
