An Australian soldier has been wounded in a skirmish in Afghanistan.

He was hit when a joint patrol of Afghan and Australian troops came under fire 12km east of their base at Tarin Kot in the southern province of Uruzgan on Thursday afternoon.

The ABC reports the incident lasted four hours.

The Australian Defence Force says his condition is serious, but stable. He is at a military hospital at Kandahar airfield.

Eleven Australian soldiers have been killed and 48 wounded in Afghanistan this year.
