Police urge gun safety after hunting deaths

19:57 pm on 11 May 2015

Police are warning hunters never to load their firearms until they are ready to fire, after two fatal hunting accidents over the weekend.

Listen to Sergeant Mike Craig

Yesterday, a 21-year-old hunter died after his gun went off shooting him in the chest, while he was climbing over a fence, in Ruatiti near Ohakune.

In the other incident, a 15-year-old from Whakatane died while duck shooting in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

Ohakune police Sergeant Mike Craig said hunters should only have their guns loaded and docked when they are ready to fire.

He said they should never have their guns pointing at themselves or others.
