One person is dead following a crash between a car and a freight train at a level crossing near the Waikato town of Morrinsville.

Police said the crash happened about 3.20pm between Piako Road and State Highway 26. Diversions were in place.

KiwiRail spokesperson David Gordon said the train was more than 700m long and carrying goods between Auckland and Tauranga.

The crossing's bells and warning lights were operating at the time, he said.

It was a terrible accident and he has offered his condolences to the friends and family of those affected, he said.

The train driver was not injured but has been stood down from duties and was receiving support, he said.

The Serious Crash Unit would investigate, the police said.

St John Ambulance said another person in the car received moderate injuries and has been taken to Waikato Hospital.
