Nauru urged by Palau media reps to reconsider ABC ban

The Palau Media Council has urged Nauru to reconsider its ban on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation at this year's Leaders Meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum.

Nauru's government last week said it was banning ABC journalists from attending the September summit, accusing the Australian broadcaster of false reporting.

The Council's Kambes Kesolei said the ban limits the ability of people in island states to find out about the discussions their governments have at the summit.

He said the Forum is the pre-eminent regional organisation and media should be free to cover its summit.

"And we from the north Pacific, the south Pacific, the islands, depend on it for so many programmes, from the University to the environmental programmes to the fishery," he said.

"And a lot of those issues are very important to be discussed at PIF Forum. We're not going to have that information that we want if the nauru government blocks Radio Australia from covering (the Forum)."
