The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared before Justice Brewer in the High Court at Auckland this morning.

He is accused of sexually and physically abusing 17 teenage boys in the mid 2000s.

Most of the teenage boys were in his care during the period of alleged abuse.

The former caregiver, who is in his 50s, had been working Child Youth and Family, now known as Oranga Tamariki.

This morning he pleaded not guilty to 43 charges, shaking his head in the dock as Justice Brewer canvassed the Crown's case in brief.

As well as the sexual allegations, he is also accused of giving some of the boys drugs.

A six-week trial is set down for April 2020.
