One dead in Otago crash

17:11 pm on 22 November 2016

A person is dead and another is critically injured after a four-car crash near the Otago town of Moeraki.

Police said four vehicles were involved in the crash, on State Highway 1, about 3.35pm.

It was on the same stretch of road where Oamaru girl Ruby Marris died last year.

"One person has died at the scene and another has critical injuries," police said.

The road was down to one lane. The Serious Crash Unit would investigate.

St John said two others, with moderate injuries, would be taken to Oamaru Hospital.

The Otago Rescue Helicopter was taking the critically-injured passenger to Dunedin Hospital.

Ruby, 5, died in a crash near Moeraki on 21 February, 2015, after foreign driver Jing Cao crossed the centre line and drove on the wrong side of the road.
