Lead contamination: Blood tests start in Otago after drinking water scare

East Otago residents have been getting tested for lead poisoning today, after discovering their water supply was contaminated.

Last Tuesday, residents in Waikouaiti and Karitane were first told about high levels of lead in their water supply.

But another community in the area says they have had no contact from the Dunedin City Council and there's been a string of revelations over the past seven days, giving them cause for concern.

In response to those concerns from residents the Dunedin City Council says staff have door-knocked every Hawkesbury Village residence.

RNZ's Dom Thomas and Tess Brunton are in Waikouaiti and filed this report.
