Honiara council demolishing illegal dwellings

05:06 am on 14 May 2012

The Honiara city council says it will be demolishing illegally built houses and stalls in an effort to clean up before July's Pacific Arts Festival.

The Solomon Star reports the council wants to change the face of the city and maintain the improvements in the future.

A senior officer says the council wants to see illegally built stalls and houses along Honiara's main highway and streets pulled down.

He says these are the priority areas council is targeting and it will later move on to the back way areas.

Demolition has already begun and the council is calling on the public to work together with them to ensure safety and cleanliness in and around the city.
