Consultation to start over Fiji charter

11:26 am on 4 August 2008

A public consultation process about the Fiji interim government's controversial Peoples' Charter is scheduled to start this week.

The Charter is supposed to be mapping the way forward for Fiji in terms of good governance and transparency, and could lead to significant constitutional changes.

A member of the National Council for Building a Better Fiji, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the draft charter is planned to be endorsed by the council this week, paving the way for a public consultation process.

"The documents will be disseminated to different parts of the country, in people's hands. And after that the teams will be dispersed to meet with the people and organise numerous meetings in villages and town centres to explain the charter and a consultation will take place."

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says they will distribute leaflets for people to sign their agreement.

Mr Yabaki says objections will also be taken into account to some extent.

The public consultation process is expected to end by October the 10th.
