A crash involving three vehicles has closed a major intersection in Hamilton.

Police said the crash happened at Wairere Drive and River Road about 8.20am.

Inspector Graham Pitkethley said police responded to reports of a car being driven erratically near a shopping centre in Te Rapa and signalled it to stop.

The vehicle left the parking building and police deployed spikes, but it continued and was chased by police.

It then crashed into two other vehicles with people inside at the intersection of Wairere Drive and River Road, Harrowfield.

The driver attempted to run away but was found located nearby by a police dog and arrested.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with driving in a dangerous manner and further charges are being considered. He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Monday.

The occupants of the parked cars suffered only minor injuries, but police said the intersection would be closed for some time while a scene examination took place.
