The government has announced it will spend $9 million on increasing the number of teachers in hard-to-staff subjects and regions.
The initiative includes scholarships for people wanting to train as science, maths or technology teachers, and funding to help Auckland primary schools prepare 40 new graduate teachers for full registration.
The government said it would also spend more on recruiting New Zealand teachers from overseas and would start promoting teaching as a career to students studying science, technology and maths.
