The Spaniards scored first and never relinquished the lead, relying on swarming interior defence and superior rebounding to snuff out the offensive threat of 2004 Olympic champions Argentina.

Point guard Ricky Rubio racked up 20 points and three assists and Marc Gasol and Willy Hernangomez swatted three shots each as Spain pulled down 47 rebounds, 20 more than Argentina, en route to a comprehensive victory.

For Gasol it was the crowning achievement of an incredible year that saw him win an NBA World Championship with the Toronto Raptors before leading his national team to glory.

He and Rubio were rewarded for their performances in Spain's unbeaten run to the gold medal with a place in the tournament's five-man All-Star team, which was announced after the final, with Rubio named the tournament's most valuable player.

Earlier, France took their second consecutive World Cup bronze medal with a 67-59 win over Australia.

Lubricated balls the key to World Cup success

Lubricating balls with baby oil is just one way teams are trying to prepare for the hot and humid conditions in Japan ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Grand slam winner Wales begin their campaign against Georgia next week and covering balls in baby oil is one way the side has been mimicking conditions.

"We've been using wet balls and been using baby oil on them as well," coach Warren Gatland was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We've taped them up as well and we've already been through that process in the camps we had before we've been away.

"We have been to two camps where one was at altitude and it was very hot in Switzerland, and then it was the late 30s in Turkey.

"We've done as much as we possibly can in terms of dealing with the heat.

"I think the humidity is going to be a factor... it's how we cope with that."

Late kick-offs on hot days will mean that players must deal with high humidity and a slippery ball.

"Players who have been to New Zealand will have experienced that," Gatland said.

"I come from Hamilton, it's incredibly humid there.

"We know what it's like and have players who have experienced a lot of night rugby so we feel we've prepared well.

"We're looking forward to it."

Garcia gets 16th European Tour victory

Spain's Sergio Garcia shot a final-round three-under par 69 and finished at 18-under overall to win the 100th edition of the KLM Open in Amsterdam by a single stroke.

The win was Garcia's 16th on the European Tour and the 2017 Masters champion's first title in the Netherlands.

Danish 18-year-old Nicolai Hojgaard missed an eagle putt on the 18th and finished with a birdie to sign for a four-under 68 and second place.

A cautious Garcia, who bogeyed the 17th, played it safe on the par-five 18th, sinking a one-foot putt to clinch the title.

Fellow overnight leader Callum Shinkwin of England carded a poor round of 74 to drop down the leaderboard to fifth. Englishman Matt Wallace finished third, three shots behind.

Parramatta embarrass Brisbane

Parramatta have sent shockwaves through Brisbane after inflicting an NRL finals record 58-0 thrashing on the Queensland glamour club which is set to lead to a review of their disappointing 2019 season.

The Eels set up a sudden-death clash with minor premiers Melbourne while Broncos players and coaches will be put under the microscope following the 11-tries-to-nil elimination final rout.

Not only was it the most points scored by a team in a finals game, it was also the biggest margin in finals history, eclipsing Newtown's 55-7 win over St George in 1944.

The Eels have a nervous wait on their hands to see if five-eighth Dylan Brown will be available for Saturday's clash with the Storm after he was put on report for a crusher tackle on Anthony Milford.

Coach Brad Arthur did his best to keep a lid on the wave of euphoria and hope saying the playing group was aware they hadn't achieved anything yet.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold described his side's effort as "embarrassing" and like "men against boys" and promised a full review.

Bournemouth moves up EPL table

Callum Wilson scored twice for Bournemouth as they enjoyed a 3-1 home victory over a defensively fragile Everton side to move into mid-table in the Premier League.

Wilson nodded the hosts into the lead from a corner in the 23rd minute only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to level it up with a header just before the break -- Everton's first away goal in the league this season.

Ryan Fraser's dangerous ball into the area flicked off Everton's Fabian Delph in the 67th minute to restore Bournemouth's lead before Wilson exploited some dreadful defending five minutes later.

It was Bournemouth's first home win of the season.

Everton, who could have gone third with a win, are now 11th, below Bournemouth on goal difference with both clubs having seven points from five games.

Meanwhile, Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Watford this morning.
