A gunman remains on the loose after a shootout just outside Morrinsville in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It started shortly after midnight, when a speeding car, being chased by police, suddenly pulled over, and a man got out and fired shots from a military style, semi-automatic weapon.

Police back-up arrived and shots were exchanged, after which the gunman managed to escape. No police were injured and it's not known if the gunman sustained any injuries.

RNZ reporter Jessie Chiang was at the scene, and told Morning Report there are cars riddled with bullet holes.
