Former Nauru MP hampered over Getax probe

08:24 am on 19 September 2016

A former Nauru opposition MP Roland Kun says he's been denied access to parliamentary records which could help in a bribery probe embroiling Nauruan politicians.

Nauru's Justice Minister David Adeang, and the President Baron Waqa, earlier denied allegations they were among those receiving kickbacks from the Australian phosphate dealer Getax in 2009 and 2010.

Australian Federal Police said in July they were still investigating Getax, and Mr Kun said he still planned to file an affidavit.

He said the Clerk of Parliament had denied him access to the official Hansard reports over that period, but he would still be able to give his recollection of events in the lead up to the change of government in 2012.

"The members of Parliament travelling to Singapore, funded by Getax, and what happened after that travel, and what I had witnessed in terms of movements in numbers in the parliament floor - which to me was a direct consequence of what Getax was doing with members of parliament on the island."

Mr Kun said he had been unable to access other necessary documents because he was locked out of his office and his email account was cancelled when he was suspended from Parliament.

Getax has denied the bribery allegations.
