An intensive 48 hour rat hunt gets underway this weekend at a rodent plagued Dunedin supermarket, that's been forced to close its doors in a bid to clear out the pests.

Countdown Dunedin South has been battling the unwanted intruders since October last year, with one rat photographed looking pretty cosy in the deli section.

NZ Food Safety is satisfied the store has acted with urgency and has a detailed pest control programme.

However, just when things appeared to be sorted, four more rats have caught in Countdown Dunedin South in the last few days.

Jason Stockill from the parent company Woolworths speaks to Lisa Owen.
