The University of Otago says it will cost more than a million dollars to install 60 security cameras around North Dunedin.
It already has 400 cameras on campus, but wants to extend that to surrounding streets for increased student safety.
The university first unveiled its plan for the extra cameras last year.
It said it would consult with students before bringing in the first stage of cameras later this year.
Some students have expressed concerns about having their daily lives monitored, but the university said footage would only be viewed on request and staff would not sit watching the cameras.
