06:24 am on 2 March 2021

Covid-19 infections have soared in Bougainville, reaching 26 at the weekend, and prompting public health officials to tighten controls.

Contact tracing will be undertaken in Arawa, Buka and Buin.

Swabs will be done on any patients who exhibit influenza symptoms, such as a simple cough, pneumonia, or other respiratory infections.

The Health Department said plans were in place to suspend in-class teaching if anyone within the school community tested positive for Covid-19.

The department was also encouraging people to not move between communities and stressed that those travelling in and out of Bougainville would need tests if they had any symptoms.

The department also reiterated the need for two metres social distancing, the wearing of face masks and thorough handwashing.

It says if people don't comply the Police, using its community policing programme, will intervene to ensure peace, order, and stability.

Bougainville had managed to stay almost free of infection for the past year, with the government stressing how vital this was because of the paucity of health care facilities in the region.

The number of cases throughout PNG has soared in recent weeks, with more than 1200 people infected.
