Kerikeri police have arrested a man they say used a gun to rob a service station - then ran away with only sweets and chocolate.

Detective Brooke Chambers said the offender entered Caltex Kerikeri and demanded cash just before 10pm on 7 September.

When the shop's fog cannon was activated, he grabbed chocolate bars and confectionary and fled on foot.

Chambers said it was incredibly frightening for the shop assistant and fortunate no one was hurt.

Since then, police had been working hard to identify and locate the person responsible, he said.

A 21-year-old man appeared in Kaikohe District Court earlier on Tuesday charged with aggravated robbery.
