Same day charges for Samoa police chief and prosecutor

15:02 pm on 17 August 2016

Samoa's Police Commissioner, Fuiavailili Egon Keil, has been served with four criminal charges over an unlawful arrest by the police of a man at the Fugalei market last year.

The Commissioner is facing one charge of unlawful detention, one of perjury, providing false statements and disorderly conduct.

The charges were served on the Commissioner on Tuesday morning after he returned arrived from an overseas holiday.

It happened at the same time as the Director of Public Prosecution, Mauga Precious Chang, was arrested by police over traffic offences committed two months ago.

Mauga is charged with negligent driving causing injury and dangerous driving.

Our Samoa correspondent Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia spoke with Sally Round and began by detailing the charges brought against Commissioner Keil.
