Floods are likely to close State Highway One in a number of spots in the lower South Island tonight, the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is warning.
Heavy rain and wind that wreaked havoc in the north on Monday moved south today.
It is monitoring the road near Maheno and Hampden in North Otago and Waikouaiti near Dunedin.
Waka Kotahi says there are no detours, and all travel should be postponed.
It says temporary speed restrictions are in place on the Kilmog Hill north of the city and there are slips on the road.
