The inland route to Kaikōura has now reopened to one lane, after being closed due to a fire earlier this morning.
Route 70, between Waiau and Mt Lyford, was closed because it was unsafe due to vegatation fires in the area.
A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson says hot, dry nor-west wind conditions are continuing today in Canterbury, after State Highway 1 was closed near Christchurch briefly yesterday by fires.
The spokesperson said motorists using Route 70 should expect delays.
Road users and residents need to be aware of the raised fire risk and avoid any activities which could spark a blaze, the spokesperson says.
Route 70 is the only alternative road into Kaikōura, outside State Highway 1 to the north and south of the town.
