The American veteran Andy Roddick has bowed out of tennis at the US Open, the 30-year-old beaten in four sets by Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round in New York.

Roddick, who announced he would retire after the tournament, won the first set in a tiebreak - but del Potro won the second in a tiebreak before sealing the match 6-2 6-4.

Roddick won 32 career titles and one grand slam, the 2003 US Open.

Del Potro goes on to play the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.
