The Māori Party says the resignation of Oranga Tamariki's most senior Māori leader is further proof the Ministry has major problems, starting at the top.

Hoani Lambert has resigned as a deputy chief executive, to take up a role at the Department of Internal Affairs.

But Mr Lambert says his departure is not a protest against the Ministry's head - Grainne Moss - and she has his confidence and endorsement for the job.

The Minister for Children, Kelvin Davis, declined Midday Report's request for an interview.

Māni Dunlop spoke to the Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.
