Henare disappointed at Cabinet rejection of Nepata payout

06:32 am on 13 December 2013

Maori Affairs Select Committee chair Tau Henare says he's shattered that Cabinet has decided not to pay extra compensation to two brothers who received life changing injuries in the Defence Force.

Damien Nepata sustained extensive burns in 1994 when the tank he was driving in Waiouru overturned.

His brother George is now a tetraplegic after falling from a stretcher during an exercise in Singapore in 1989.

The brothers have previously received compensation from the Government Superannuation Fund, Defence Force benefits and the ACC.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee has recommended the brothers get additional compensation for their injuries and subsequent hardship.

Mr Henare says the Cabinet could have at least made a special case for the Nepata brothers.

He says personally he's utterly shattered for the two brothers.

Mr Henare says if it's good enough for the Government to bail out companies like South Canterbury Finance to the tune of $1 billion - then why couldn't it make an allowance for the Nepata brothers.
