One person dead and others injured in multiple crashes

One person is dead, another critically injured and three others seriously hurt after four car crashes overnight.

Two pedestrians were hit in separate incidents - one near Huntly just after midnight, causing the person critical injuries, and the other near Ōpotiki about 2.30am, where a person has since died.

A car rolled in Shannon in Horowhenua just before 3am.

One person was initially trapped in the vehicle. They were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Meanwhile, a car with three occupants went over a bank in Newlands, just north of Wellington, at about 3am.

One was critically injured.
