A man left with life-threatening wounds after being shot in the Far North town of Mangōnui is now in a stable condition according to police.
Kaitāia police were called to Mary Hassett Street around 3.40am Wednesday after reports of the shooting.
The man was flown to Whangārei Hospital by Northland Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition and was operated on later that day.
An examination of the scene has finished and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
