American Samoan rises to US army command position in Ft Hood

15:08 pm on 22 April 2011

A native son of American Samoa is the new commander of the US Army's First Cavalry Division headquarters in Fort Hood, Texas.

Command Sergeant Major Isaia Ace Vimoto took over the commander post this week.

He told the Fort Hood Herald newspaper he was honoured and privileged to be selected as the division's next senior non-commissioned officer.

He says it's great to get back in the saddle after being out of the fight for two years.

In 2007, Vimoto's younger son, 19-year old Army Private Timothy Vimoto was killed in Iraq during his tour of duty.
