Budget Day Hīkoi heads to Parliament as thousands gather around country

16:34 pm on 30 May 2024

Thousands of Māori and their supporters gathered around the country on Thursday.

Tino Rangatiratanga flags waved in protest of the government's policies, demanding a better, more equal system for Māori.

Three vehicle convoys slowed traffic on Auckland's Southern, Northern, and Western motorways during peak morning commuter time.

A crowd marched on Parliament in Wellington, where inside the country's leaders were ushering in this year's Budget.

It is the second time Māori have mobilised on a national scale with the first hīkoi taking place last December.

The national protest coincides with the budget announcements.
