Police officer knocked out by man who had allegedly jumped in front of truck on Auckland motorway

An Auckland police officer has been knocked unconscious by a man who had reportedly thrown himself in front of a truck on the northern motorway this morning.

The officer was trying to taser the man when he was knocked out.

Inspector Peter Raynes of, Tāmaki Makaurau Police said police were called to an incident on the Northern Motorway, north of Tristram Avenue at about 10.20am.

There had been reports that a man who had jumped in front of traffic on the motorway, causing a minor collision involving three vehicles, including a truck..

When police arrived, the man jumped onto the windscreen of the police car, before attacking the officer.

"The officer has attempted to taser the man and has been knocked unconscious by the offender."

Raynes said members of the public helped restrain the man until more police arrived and arrested him.

The officer has been taken to hospital where he will be assessed for injuries.

The man who was tasered has also been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Raynes said charges are likely.
