Pakistan parties meet to discuss relations with US

21:47 pm on 29 September 2011

The largest gathering of Pakistan's political and religious parties for years has been called to discuss relations with the United States following comments by America's top military officer.

Admiral Mike Mullen said Pakistan was supporting Afghan insurgents.

The BBC reports his comments have caused a frenzied reaction. Many have interpreted the statements that Pakistan has helped orchestrate attacks in Afghanistan and that the US would do what was necessary to protect its soldiers as a threat of all-out war.

Religious parties in particular have already issued statements saying they want concrete steps laid out in a meeting aimed at ending cooperation with the US.
